IWOC Events

IWOC is not a virtual organization. It is made up of real freelance writers who perform real work for real clients. So in addition to our Internet presence and the Web tools that we offer to our members, we also provide opportunities to meet, mingle, connect, learn, and network—live and in-person—not only with other IWOC members but with other writing organizations in and around Chicago. Our main vehicles for doing so are regular meetings, co-hosted mixers, parties, and special events.

Whether you are an independent writer looking for opportunities to learn about the craft and business or merely an interested party, we invite you to join us at our next event.

Meetings

IWOC hosts regular meetings on the second Tuesday of every month except August and December, when we party, instead. Each meeting includes a time to mix and mingle followed by a presentation on a timely topic relevant to independent writers. And after the meeting, all attendees are invited to reconvene at a local eatery to continue the camaraderie and discussion.

All regular meetings are free for IWOC members.  Non-members pay $10 with online pre-registration, or $15 at the door. Non-member attendees can get a 10% discount on their first year of membership if they join IWOC by midnight that night. (But must attend meeting to get the coupon code!)

Get-togethers

In between meetings and other official IWOC events, IWOC-ers who live in and around the Chicagoland area get together regularly to chat about freelance writing, find out what's going on in each others' lives, and solve the problems of the world.

These get-togethers are open to anyone (IWOC member or not) who has an interest in freelance writing and wants to find herself or himself in the company of friendly, like-minded folk who don't talk with their mouths full when they're eating breakfast or lunch.

Mixers

To encourage fellowship and networking between Chicagoland writing groups, IWOC invites other groups to participate in casual mixers on the second Tuesdays in June and October.

All mixers are held in Chicago dining and... well... drinking establishments and are free to attend by IWOC members (but with a cash bar, of course).

Parties

Yes, we do party on occasion—twice a year, actually, on the second Tuesdays of August and December.

The August party is better known as "IWOCFest" and is usually held on the rooftop of a restaurant in Greektown. The IWOC Holiday Party in December is a moveable feast, usually Spanish tapas or Thai. And in the spirit of the holiday season, it includes a visit from Santa himself, as well as the exchange of gently used books.

Special Events

To foster health in the world of freelance writing, IWOC takes part in and sometimes hosts special events of interest to Chicagoland freelancers.

Some events are sponsored by other organizations; others are sponsored by IWOC itself. But regardless of who creates and organizes the event, each contributes in significant ways to the Chicago-area independent writing community.
