Passwords Are to Go the Way of the Dodo?
Glory
be! No more long cheat-sheets filled with gibberish passwords to suit
the require-ments of finicky sites? Or sweaty palms because we've stuck
with the easily hacked "password1234"? Nope. It's all about to change.

Former IWOC president Jane Ranshaw celebrated a special birthday by jumping out of an airplane in Monterey, California. Her advice to other would-be jumpers: "Keep your mouth shut. There are bugs up there." Jane said the view of Monterey Bay was spectacular, and she's glad she did it.

MARCH MEETING PREVIEW
Building a Book Platform: What
It Is and Why You Need It
Few things will do more to develop your reputation – your brand – as an accomplished writer than producing a book.
It doesn’t even have to be about the day-to-day work you do. It
might be a novel or a series of case studies or a travel piece about
your trip to Bora Bora. It’s the book itself that sells you and proves
that you understand what it means to take on a sizable project, develop
and research it, and put it all together as a coherent, well written
book.
Writing the book doesn’t need to be an overwhelming task. Think
about starting with client pieces that you’ve already written and been
paid for. Compilations of articles on a central theme may accomplish
your purpose.

FEBRUARY MEETING RECAP |
Time Management Tips for the Freelance Writing Life
IWOCers Laurel Johnson and Betsy Storm, a
dynamic duo, began their February 10 time management presentation on
time! The duo outlined the steps to time management. Then, they put it
all together by going through an imaginary day in the life of a
freelance writer. The many, many applications, time-savers, books,
podcast, notes, and entire presentation are available to members on the
IWOC website. (Editor’s note: you can also download the
presentation and/or the podcast by clicking on the button at the end of
this article on page 3.)
They also taught the audience to be
their own superheroes in the form of the Wonder Woman pose. Stand up
straight and tall, hands on hips and breathe deep. The pose does
wonders for your confidence so it is great to use before public
speaking.

Did You Know?
Let’s get acquainted with the polysyndeton. Poly wanna what? Polysyndeton (pol-i-SIN-da-ton) is the use of several conjunctions in close succession to create an effect. The word makes sense if you break it down: “poly” means several and “syndeton” means bound together with. The function of a polysyndeton is not only to bring continuity to a sentence by repeating the conjunction, but also to provide rhythm and style. Check out these examples:

Tornado Season
for Writers
In not too long a time the cold and snow
will go away, and we will hear talk about tornado season and admonitions
to have a disaster plan in place in case storms make splinters of our
homes. The same can be said for our businesses, and the calamity doesn’t
have to be as dramatic or as rare as a tornado.
I have friends who run a few family-owned
Italian restaurants in southeastern Wisconsin. One night at the end of
November a bug-zapper light in one restaurant shorted out. It was late,
the restaurant was closed, and by the time someone spotted the flames
and firefighters arrived, the business was a total loss. Other
businesses in the same strip mall suffered smoke damage. To add to the
headache, December is the busiest month of the year for this restaurant.
My friends were prepared, or as
prepared as they could be. They had insurance to cover the losses and
some costs including some payroll costs.

Internet Neutrality
The FCC voted 3-2 (3 Dems, 2 Reps) for new net neutrality regs that would treat broadband as a public utility. This means big biz won't get faster speeds even if they're willing to pay for them.
This is a great victory for the little guys (us), but it remains to be seen whether Congress will get into the act and rewrite the law to give the biggies an edge.
